Rest Day and Delphi Delight!

A special rest day as we had 2 organized events planned for us. First was a guided tour of the ancient acropolis of Delphi, sitting  quite a distance up a mountain, this ancient city overlooks the sea miles away and the village of Galaxidi.

Delphi was the actual centre of the universe, as Zeus consulted with the Oracle of Delphi, who told him to fly two birds, one from the western end of the world and one from the eastern end…where they met was the centre and is marked by an egg shaped monolith

The Oracle of Delphi: a common woman with prophetic power was chosen to tell the future, it  was said she was never wrong. She stayed in the Temple of Apollo, and foreign rulers, common people and even gods came to her for guidance. It is said she would inhale magic vapours in the temple and the resultant hallucinations were her special power of prophecy.  (centuries later geologists noted that below the temple were 2 fault lines and gas emitted from them, hence the inhalation of Smokey vapours).

The temple of Apollo

Most of Delphi was destroyed by earthquakes and very little remains of the buildings , multitude of statues and monuments that were here.

The museum beside the ruins does have some fantastic original statues and pieces of buildings or monuments.

The theatre is well preserved   IMG_0885 and about 15 minute walk above the temple of Apollo is the stadium where athletic events were held

Back to our hotel for a cooking class taught by owner and hostess Chrisoula. I learned to make filo pastry!! Then we used it to make a spanakopita , cheese pie and mushroom pie, which we ate tonight for dinnerIMG_0916 I
