So why does Athena love Odysseus? He is a liar, a cheat, a rape and pillage pirate, and above all, a shamelessly self interested egotist. He has no problem organising the sacrifice of innocent girls nor framing innocent people.
In spite of this, Athena adores Odysseus, so talented, so duplicitous she says, proud of his talents.
However, Athena is the goddess of wisdom, why would she want anything to do with him?
The Greeks had many words/types of wisdom – one being Metis wisdom which is defined as cleverness and the ability to get oneself out of an issue.
The truth is Athena wasn’t about moral wisdom, she was about cunning and cleverness, what Odysseus survives on.
But what the heck, he’s the man I call The Big O, so let’s keep following him home!
Another big day looms, hard to leave this beautiful seaside hotel, but someone has to do it!
