On the Road – Distance 89km / 55mi | Elevation 1311m / 4301ft

It was into the rainforest today, with some hills ahead. Leaving the shores of Macquarie Harbour behind, we climbed to a maximum elevation of just over 500 metres before descending to our finish in Tullah on the shores of Lake Rosebery at approximately 150 metres.

For much of the time we had the road pretty much to yourself, as there is only light traffic out this way.

The first 20 kilometres of riding was relatively benign, rolling along the coastal flats before climbing to a great lookout over the Henty Dunes and Ocean Beach – which stretches north of Strahan for 40 kilometres. From the lookout the road undulated gently, rising overall through open buttongrass moorland with views of mountains to the north to the old mining town of Zeehan, where we coffee.

Over the next 30 kilometres there was approximately 450 metres of climbing to lunch at Rosebery – which is at about the same elevation as our coffee stop!

The terrain was up and down in this section, with the most significant climb being an 8% grade over few kilometres.

Directly after lunch we had 6 kilometre climb averaging about 7.3% and gaining about 340 metres. The upside – and downside! – of this hill was we rode riding through beautiful, cool myrtle rainforest until we were back on the flatter ground surrounding Lake Rosebery. A nice cold pint from Fremantle’s Little Creatures Brewery awaited our arrival at the Lakeside Lodge in Tullah.
