On the Road – Distance 93km / 58mi Elevation 1399m / 4590ft

The Intercity Cycleway provided a safe and tranquil exit from Hobart’s CBD and through the northern suburbs, on the same route we rode out of yesterday to MONA. However before we reached that spot we headed inland for an early challenge.

At 12km we climb 5.6km, averaging around 6.7%. It did have a few pinches but it was a great way out of the city and gave us an early taste of wild Tasmania. There were a lot of dead wombats on the road to be avoided.

From the top we had a nice descent all the way down to New Norfolk for a coffee at a local cyclist’s hangout with some of the best cakes in Tasmania.

After coffee at New Norfolk we escaped again to quiet country roads, riding alongside the scenic Derwent River to historic hop-growing Bushy Park, then on to Westerway and its wonderful raspberries and ice cream.

The day finishedwith a couple of hills before the exhilarating descent to Meadowbank Dam then a sedate recovery to our accommodation at Curringa Farm.

Owners Tim and Cathy have a 50,000 acre sheep farm and 14 2 bdr, 2 on suite cabins spread out on the property. Our cabin was 2-3 km away from the main building, we were transported by Tim to and fro in his old bus! With no surface light and clear skies, star gazing was amazing, the Southern Cross an Orion were easily visible. Dinner was bbq steak, lamb and potatoes.

At dusk and at sunrise there were numerous wallabies jumping through grounds

Life is good at Curringa Farm!
