Leaving Deloraine after sumptuous breakfast at the ‘eclectic’ Empire Hotel, we crossed the historic bridge over the Meander River, passed the town’s arts centre on the left and soon we were in the country again.
Riding through Westbury, on our right we had views of the brooding Western Tiers, a spectacular sight on a sunny day.

We passed quickly through the pretty villages of Hagley and Carrick, then ducking into Hadspen where one of Australia’s most famous cyclists, Richie Porte, was born. This is why this area is famed, at least in Tasmania, as a cycling mecca.

You can get any kind of poo you want!….and free!
Lunch was at Brickendon, a World Heritage Site. This farm, mill and granary was worked by 50 convicts in the 1820’s.

After lunch we rode through the authentic Australian village of Evandale….

A quick stop at Josef Chromy Winery

Then we descended into the Tamar Valley to Launceston, our base for two nights.

Our shorter riding day today sets us up perfectly for tomorrow’s epic challenge!

Checked in at the Grand Chancellor, then walked to dinner at a quaint restaurant and a fantastic meal…polenta w chorizo, duck confit and coffee ice cream w chocolate
