“I’ve Been to the Mountaintop”…UnderDownUnder Day 20: Richmond to Mt Kunanji to Hobart

On the Road – Distance 71km/ 44mi & Elevation 1754m/5755ft.

We had a really interesting ride on the menu today, heading southwest from fertile agricultural terrain of Richmond into the city to Tasmania’s only “hors catégorie” climb – the fourth-hardest in Australia – and the place where Cadel Evans cast himself as a future champion of the Tour de France.

In between we traversed around Hobart via a cunning route put together by our local experts. A nice warm-up of about 4km out of Richmond passed a couple of wineries and a cidery before before we crossed south to the mouth of the Derwent River and into the inner eastern suburbs of Hobart.

With great views of Hobart we used the bike path on the bridge over the river before ducking down to our last hotel, the Grand Chancellor…we had come full circle. We will spend 2 nights here.

It is here that we had the option to ride Hobart’s premier climb, Kunanyi! and a few of us exercised that option!

Mount Wellington/KunanjiDistance 22.2 kilometres / 13.8 mi / Elevation 1271 m / 4170 ft

For those who are out for a challenge, there is a Classic Strava Segment from the Cascade Brewery to the summit of Mount Wellington/Kunanji

The climb up the Kunanji was truly a Haute Categorie climb, at least my tired legs told me so! the road was paved but rough making the descent almost as difficult as the ascent…but the reward of viewing Hobart and surroundings was well worth the pain!

After returning to Hobart (thankfully didn’t have to ride across the bridge again!), a stroll around the harbour and the Salamanca Marke area, quite a vibrant spot in Hobart with shops and restaurants. A burger, fries and a pint on the wharf.

Life is good in Hobart…
