The old section of Córdoba is a wonderful maze of tiny cobbled alleys that unexpectedly open up into small squares with shady orange trees & a handy cafe or bar. 

The houses are classic moorish influence with thick walls and internal courtyards complete with fountains and lush greenery. It really is a lovely place to wander without intent – just enjoying the ambience.

Our guided visit to the UNESCO listed Mosque Cathedral was fascinating. Originally built in 8th century as a mosque with additional expansions over the subsequent 200 years it is a superb example of Islamic architecture. 

However, when the Christian army entered the town in 12th century, Holy Mass was celebrated in the building and in time the central portion of the mosque columns were demolished to create a traditional church within its walls. 

So you have the unusual juxtaposition of ornate, guilded traditional catholic decoration within the unadorned collanaded space.
