Our ferry was to provide the views to appreciate the 200+ peaks, fjords and spectacular views for one last time on our final day. However, as soon as the ferry left for the 30 minute ride across the fjord it started raining and the low hanging clouds blocked the view.

Today had a bit of everything, great coastal paths, beautiful views, a hill to climb and a town entrance into one of Norway’s most interesting locations and our final destination – Alesund.(pronounced Oh-les-soond)

Ålesund is built on a row of islands extending out into the ocean, but it’s most famous for its beautiful architecture, which is certainly something that not many (any?) Norwegian cities can say!

The Norwegians have a saying: “I haven’t seen anything like it since Alesund burnt down.” Since this charming port city invariably tops national polls as the most beautiful town in Norway, it was clearly some rebuilding job. This elegant port city was ravaged by fire in 1904 but rose like a phoenix amid icy islands and snowy peaks.

we finished today’s ride and inaugural Vikings tour in full sun on the pier at a microbrewery for fish and chips and beer…

Then a few blocks away to our hotel the Hotel Brosundet, and after packing the bike away we settled in for one last gourmet dinner before bidding farewell to our fellow riders and new friends.(Aussies Michael and Louise, Jane and Tony, the Kiwis Cher and Hamish, Lloyd and Julie, Rosa and Justine, and fellow Canadian George). And of course my friend Rae. Guides Henrick, Charlie Tor and Sam were tremendous and true professionals and made for a fantastic trip. Hope to see all again somewhere along the line.

A beautiful little place to finish our Odyssey!
Life is Good in Alesund!
