Rest Day? Well we weren’t on the bikes but we did take a 7km walk across the hills and gullies to the UNESCO Heritage listed site of Ait Benhaddou.
This Kasbah has been occupied since the 11th century and it is located on the historic caravan route to the Sahara.
The architecture may look familiar as it has been used in many movies and series including Game of Thrones and Gladiator. In fact they were just constructing some additional sets for Gladiator 2.
We watched a local artist create pictures using saffron, black tea & indigo as inks. initially the artwork was like a very pale watercolour. But as he waved the paper over a kerosene flame (carefully) the colours deepened and then the indigo began to show.
Finally some well deserved R&R in our lovely Riad in Ouarzazate. Gaylene & I indulged in a ‘Hammam avec gommage’. Basically a steam room and very thorough body scrub. It certainly got rid of the ingrained Moroccan red dust.
