What a beautiful day for ride!\u2026once we got out of the city. Copenhagen is amazing but riding in the city is just crazy. Not only a multitude of bikes and cyclists, but they have their own way of navigating , which for a novice can be quite stressful. Also there is combination of bike lanes, 2-way, 1-way lanes, or no lane and share with traffic. At intersections turning bikes merge into crossing traffic without stopping, there is constant chaotic movement. Come try it sometime!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before starting out, I wandered out very early and walked to see the famous Little Mermaid before any crowds arrived, it is about 1.5 km from our hotel, so 3km round trip. Also a replica of Michaelangelo\u2019s David near the Royal pier(left photo). Rumours abound that David and Mermaid had a thing\u2026who knows?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the Road: Distance 101 km\/ 62.45 miles I Elevation 536 metres\/ 1,800 ft<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our hotel was built in the 16th century. a warehouse, once centre of mercantile trade with the Balitcs, restored and exposed giant wood beams to a luxury hotel.
Heading west along canals, across parks, through the city, we rode for 20km before we emerged into the countryside, what a welcome relief.
With perfectly smooth tarmac and very gentle rolling hills we coffee\u2019d in the town of Roskilde. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roskilde, the ancient Viking capital of Denmark, now home to the country\u2019s best Viking ship remains and museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the capital of Denmark, Roskilde oozes history and is a must stop for a tour named Vikings! With its picturesque location by the fjord and its rich historical heritage, it was a great coffee stop location on our first full day’s ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Viking Ship Museum exhibits the five 1000-year-old original ship finds from the Viking Age (the Skuldelev Ships) as well as a fleet of sailing reconstructions. Craftsmen keep up the traditions of the old maritime trades, continue their work on the shores restoring<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lunch was in Holbaek, a beautiful picnic put together by Julie and Christiana, and a photo with new Aussie friends Michael and Louise, and one with George from Chicago by way of PEI, and Michelle and Michael from Connecticut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rolling on through beautiful historic villages like Herslev, we headed over the Munkholmbroen bridge to Horby, skirting the Holb\u00e6k Fjord to our hotel on its shores. dinner in the hotel was outstanding with a white asparagus and prawns in a bernaise sauce for first course, garden salad, roast veal and strawberries with ice cream<\/p>\n\n\n\n
