On the Road – Distance: 101km \/ 63mi I Elevation: 2157m \/ 7077ft<\/span><\/p>\n

Today\u2019s riding kept us in the quiet agricultural foothills of the Apennines. We passed some great sites such as Castel Arquato and Vigoleno. We really \u2018rolled\u2019 across the northern foothills of the Apennines and the terrain was challenging. However this riding is beautiful and it kept us away from the busy industrial plains to the north. In so doing we explored a remote and beautiful part of Italy that few tourists ever see \u2013 the occasional steep ramp was part of the charm, emphasis on steep!….like 17% in places.<\/p>\n

\nTasting Notes: The Bread Basket<\/span><\/p>\n

Emilia-Romagna is affectionately known as the \u201cbread basket\u201d of Italy! This region is considered by many to be the gastronomical and culinary heart of the country. It is the source of many of the vital, staple ingredients that Italian cuisine is noted for: Prosciutto di Parma, Aceto Balsamico, Parmigiano-Reggiano, and an enormous variety of fresh, hand-made, stuffed pastas.
\nDestination – Antico Borgo di Tabiano Castello<\/span><\/p>\n

The Antico Borgo di Tabiano Castello dates back form the XI century and was built on the ruins of an old Roman settlement. It was the military stronghold of the Pallavicino family, one of the most powerful families of the era, which dominated this strategic area during the centuries of struggle between the Imperial and Vatican forces. The Tabiano Castle has been at the centre of many historic events and presides over the rich salt wells, the olive groves and the old pilgrim road to Rome; The Via Francigena.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
